My interests lie in exploring social themes related to the day-to-day struggles of living in Appalachia. Creating visual stories based on history and events I've encountered or have experienced. This region is very unique, with its friendly people and its oppressive poverty both co-existing. Our environment will dictate how we live, so building these narratives into my work, allows me to explore those concepts. I'm currently concentrating on a series that highlights rural farm life, which includes my own family's recent past. Family photos from this time are my muse and lead my creative direction.
Drawing upon my past experience as a graphic designer, I follow the creed of “Less is More” in my paintings. How to convey a mood or compose a scene with as little detail as possible. I want to suggest, and let the viewer see what they want out of the image.
